How to decide whether a Vietnam local number is worth it

Vietnam eSIM with a phone number vs data-only

Vietnam travellers usually ask the same question at checkout: do I need a local number, or is data enough? The answer depends on the trip. If you only need maps, Grab, WhatsApp, hotel messages, translation, and browsing, a data-only Vietnam eSIM is often simple. If you want plan-specific calls or SMS, look at Vietnam local eSIM bundles that include a phone number.

BambooSIM's Vietnam range includes different product types, so check the specific plan inclusions before buying. MobiFone local bundles can include a phone number, while standard data products are data-only.

Quick answer: do tourists need a Vietnamese number?

Most tourists do not need a Vietnamese phone number. Mobile data is enough for Grab, Google Maps, WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, email, app-based calls, and web bookings. Choose a Vietnam eSIM with a local number when you know you need standard local calls, Vietnamese SMS, a local callback number, or a service that will not accept an overseas number.

On BambooSIM's current range, Viettel options are data-only, while eligible MobiFone local bundles can include a Vietnamese number. Treat the exact product page as the contract: a carrier name alone does not prove that calls, SMS, top-up, or a particular app allowance is included.

When data-only is enough

Most travellers can manage Vietnam with data only. Grab, Google Maps, hotel chat, airline apps, WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, and email cover the usual tasks. Restaurants, tour desks, and hotels often use messaging apps rather than phone calls.

Choose data-only if you want the least setup friction and do not expect to receive Vietnamese SMS. It is a clean fit for short city breaks, beach stays, and travellers who keep their home SIM active for banking codes.

Data-only also does not mean “internet only with no communication”. WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio, Messenger, Signal, Teams, Zoom, and similar services carry calls or messages over data. Your contacts use the account or home number already linked to those apps.

One important distinction: a data-only eSIM will not receive SMS sent to your Australian or home number. Those messages still go to the home SIM. Keep that line enabled if you need bank codes, but disable its mobile data and roaming unless your home carrier says otherwise.

When a local number helps

A Vietnam eSIM with phone number is useful if you expect local callbacks, plan-specific SMS, or services that prefer a Vietnamese contact number. It can also help with longer stays where you are booking activities, changing accommodation, or dealing with delivery and transport details.

Check whether calls and SMS are included, metered, or unavailable on the exact plan. Do not assume every Vietnam eSIM includes the same voice or text rules.

Ask these questions before paying:

  1. Is a Vietnamese number actually included?
  2. Can it receive SMS, send SMS, or both?
  3. Are calls on-net only, or can you call other Vietnamese networks?
  4. Are outbound calls included, deducted from credit, or unavailable?
  5. Can the plan be topped up or extended?
  6. Does identity verification happen before delivery or after arrival?

“On-net” means a call or SMS stays within the same carrier network. “Off-net” means it goes to another Vietnamese network. A bundle with generous on-net minutes may still charge or restrict off-net calls, so this is more useful than the headline minute count.

Common situations

Grab, maps, and hotel chat

Choose data-only. Grab and maps need data and location access; WhatsApp or in-app chat handles most tourist coordination. A local voice number is optional.

Banking codes from Australia

Keep the Australian SIM enabled and use the Vietnam eSIM for data. Whether the home line receives an SMS abroad depends on the Australian carrier, account, phone, and roaming settings—not on the Vietnam eSIM.

Long stay, deliveries, or local work

Compare a local-number bundle. A Vietnamese contact number can be more convenient for standard callbacks, local organisations, delivery instructions, or services that explicitly require a domestic number.

Calling family at home

Use a data app unless you have checked international-call inclusions. A Vietnamese local-call allowance usually does not mean unlimited calls to Australia, the UK, Europe, or another country.

Receiving one-time codes from Vietnamese services

A local number may help, but it is not a guarantee that every platform accepts prepaid, tourist, or newly issued numbers. Confirm the service requirement before buying a plan solely for an OTP.

Arrival timing

Install the eSIM before departure on stable Wi-Fi. After landing in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, or another Vietnamese airport, assign mobile data to the travel eSIM and test maps before leaving the terminal.

For help, use the Android setup guide or iPhone setup guide.

If keeping two lines active, give them clear names such as “Home SMS” and “Vietnam Data”. Set Vietnam as the mobile-data line and turn off automatic data switching during setup. That makes it easier to see which line is responsible for a problem or charge.

Best fit by route

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are app-heavy because traffic, ride-hailing, and restaurant searches happen constantly. Da Nang and Hoi An can be lighter, but hotel transfers and day trips still add usage. Longer coastal routes make a bigger plan easier to live with.

FAQs

Do all Vietnam eSIMs include a phone number?

No. Some MobiFone local bundles include a number, while standard data eSIMs are data-only.

Is a data-only eSIM enough for Grab?

Usually yes. Ride-hailing and maps generally need mobile data more than a local voice line.

Should I keep my home SIM active?

Yes if you need bank SMS or calls from home. Keep its mobile data disabled to avoid roaming charges.

Does a local Vietnam number replace my WhatsApp number?

No. Installing an eSIM does not automatically change the number registered to WhatsApp. Keep the existing WhatsApp account unless you deliberately choose its change-number process.

Can a Vietnam local-number eSIM call Australia?

Only if the exact bundle includes international calling or has usable call credit and rates. Local minutes are not automatically international minutes.
