Before rescanning an eSIM QR code, deleting a profile or changing phones, check installation status, transfer eligibility and the safest next step.

Do not assume an eSIM QR code can be reused. Many travel eSIMs are intended for one installation, and a saved copy of the code is not a guarantee of another download. The right next step depends on whether the profile was never installed, is still on a phone, has been deleted, or needs to move to another device.
If your eSIM is installed but not connecting, keep it installed while you investigate. Turning a line off is different from deleting its profile. This guide helps you choose the right support or buying decision; the order's current instructions determine what is possible for your specific plan.
There are three separate things: the QR code or installation details, the eSIM profile stored on the phone, and the purchased data plan. Keeping one does not necessarily preserve the others.
An installation code is not a pool of data that can be divided among phones. Likewise, unused data in your account does not prove that a new device can download the old profile. Before buying for a future trip, distinguish a plan that can be topped up from one that permits profile replacement or device transfer. Those are separate capabilities.
| Your situation | Check first | Avoid doing this |
|---|---|---|
| Code has never been installed | Correct device, expiry and installation timing in the order | Testing it on a spare phone before the intended device |
| Phone says the code was already used | Whether the profile is already present in SIM settings | Repeatedly deleting and adding profiles |
| Profile is installed but has no data | Selected data line, destination, validity and product-specific settings | Treating reinstallation as the first repair |
| Profile was deleted | Provider's replacement eligibility for that exact order | Assuming the original QR code restores it |
| You are upgrading phones | Confirmed transfer or replacement process | Erasing the old phone before service is arranged |
If a scan produces an error, inspect the phone's SIM list before trying another installation. An earlier attempt may have completed. Note the exact message and whether a new line appears, then follow the provider's instructions.
For an installed line, check whether it is enabled and selected for mobile data. Confirm you are in a supported destination and have reached the correct activation stage. Roaming and APN settings vary by product, so copying a friend's settings may make the diagnosis harder. The eSIM connection troubleshooting guide covers that branch of the problem.
Manual installation details supplied with the order normally provide another method of installing the same profile. They should not be treated as a second eSIM entitlement or a way around a used-code restriction. If the QR and manual methods both fail, collect the error and contact support instead of removing a working line.
Apple documents eSIM Quick Transfer for supporting providers. That feature is not evidence that every travel eSIM can move between iPhones. A device's transfer menu and the provider's eligibility rules both matter.
For BambooSIM, the current device-transfer help page says installed eSIMs cannot normally be moved directly. Some eligible legacy products may offer a paid replacement in the portal. Creating an eligible replacement immediately ends the old eSIM and plan, with the remaining eligible plan reassigned on a pro-rata basis. Many products do not support that automatic option.
Before proceeding, confirm the replacement fee, remaining allowance, validity and new-device compatibility. Keep the old connection available while asking, and arrange unrestricted internet for installing the replacement. If no supported transfer exists, compare a new destination eSIM only after establishing what happens to the original order.
Apple's deletion guidance advises against erasing an eSIM for troubleshooting unless the carrier directs it. Deletion can require provider assistance to restore service; it is not equivalent to switching the line off and on.
If you have already deleted the profile, tell support that explicitly. Include the order reference, product name, phone model, approximate deletion time and error shown when attempting to reinstall. Provide sensitive identifiers only through the official support channel when requested. Do not post the QR code in a public forum or review.
When selling or giving away a phone, follow the manufacturer's device-erasure process after resolving the service arrangements. If you simply want to stop using a travel line after the trip, first check whether you will need that profile for a supported top-up or future service. Removing the profile does not itself answer questions about refunds, renewal or account cancellation.
Confirm which device will receive the eSIM, that it is unlocked and compatible, and who will install it. Keep each traveller's installation details separate. For a family, buy according to the number of independent connections required rather than assuming one code works on several phones. Our family eSIM planning guide compares separate plans with sharing a permitted hotspot.
This small assignment step is particularly useful when one person places every order. An unused code intended for a relative should not be installed on the buyer's phone merely to check that it works.
A second scan is not guaranteed to install another profile. If the first installation succeeded, check the existing line and use the provider's instructions. An unused code, a failed installation and a deleted profile require different checks.
Not necessarily. Phone migration and eSIM transfer are separate processes, and provider support is required. Confirm the exact travel plan's eligibility before erasing or trading in the old phone.
No. Replacement depends on the product, installation status and provider policy. Some plans may have a paid option, while others cannot be automatically replaced. Keep an installed profile until support confirms the appropriate action.

Prepare a Google Pixel for a travel eSIM: check unlocking, add your plan, choose the data SIM and troubleshoot arrival without deleting the profile.
