BambooSIM sells travel eSIMs. Our guides use product research and planning examples; field tests are identified explicitly. Our editorial method and corrections policy.

A compatible, network-unlocked Google Pixel can use a travel eSIM for mobile data while you manage your usual number separately. Before buying, confirm the exact Pixel model and purchase region, the plan's device support, and when its validity begins. Having an eSIM menu does not settle every compatibility or activation question.

This guide is for the travel decision and arrival check. For Samsung menus, use our Samsung Galaxy and Android setup guide. Once the device is confirmed, compare travel eSIM destinations.

Reviewed 4 November 2026 using Google's documentation. This is a documentation-based checklist, not a claim that we tested every Pixel model. BambooSIM sells travel eSIMs; our editorial method explains how we review advice.

Check three things before checkout

CheckWhat to establishIf the answer is unclear
Exact phoneModel, purchase region and supported SIM combinationAsk support with the model details before purchasing
Network lockWhether another provider's SIM is allowedAsk the original seller or carrier about unlocking
Selected planDevice eligibility, installation instructions and validity triggerRead the specific bundle, not only the destination heading

Google documents two active eSIM profiles on Pixel 7 or later when the carrier supports that configuration. Older devices and some regional models have different combinations. Check Google's current dual-SIM guidance rather than assuming every Pixel works identically.

A screen passcode and a network lock are different things. Being able to unlock the screen does not prove the phone accepts another mobile provider. Google's carrier-unlocking guidance explains that a phone bought from a carrier may be locked. Resolve that before departure while the seller is easy to contact.

Prepare the order and a fallback

Save the order reference, installation instructions and support contact somewhere available over Wi-Fi. Keep the QR code private: it is an installation credential, not a photo to post in a travel group. If the code will be displayed on the same phone, check whether the provider supplies a supported installation link or manual details.

Decide which existing line you will keep enabled. A work eSIM, home eSIM and travel eSIM can create a different active-line problem from a physical home SIM plus a travel profile. Write down the intended arrangement before changing anything; do not erase a working line to create space without confirming how to restore it.

Also save the first hotel address, transfer booking and an offline route. That gives you time to diagnose connectivity calmly instead of relying on an airport taxi queue as your setup window.

Add the travel eSIM at the permitted time

Follow the selected plan's timing. Some plans permit installation at home; others specify installation after arrival. The installation and activation timing guide explains the difference.

On supported Pixel software, start in Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM, then choose the eSIM setup option. Follow the provider's QR or activation instructions and the prompts on your phone. Menu wording can change with Android versions. If an unexpected transfer or replacement prompt appears, stop and check that you are adding the travel profile rather than moving your home service. See Google's setup instructions.

After installation, label the profile with the destination and trip, for example “Japan holiday”. Compare the label with the order before enabling data. A clear label is especially helpful when the underlying network name differs from the shop where you bought the plan.

Choose the data line deliberately

Use the SIM settings to make the travel eSIM the default mobile-data line. Calls and texts have their own selections. Turn off automatic data switching if you want to prevent the phone from changing to the home data line; keep home-line data roaming off. Enable roaming on the travel line only as its instructions require. Google explains these network controls.

Keeping the home line enabled can still expose calls and messages to that carrier's overseas rules. Turning off its data roaming is not a promise that every other use is free. If retaining your number matters, read receiving home-number SMS abroad before choosing whether to leave it enabled.

Test arrival in a useful order

  1. Confirm you are in a country included by the purchased bundle and within its validity.
  2. Check that the travel profile is enabled and selected for data.
  3. Temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi and load a simple web page.
  4. If it works, test the map or transport app you actually need.
  5. If it fails, reconnect to Wi-Fi and compare roaming, network and APN settings with the supplied instructions.

Change one setting at a time. Save the error wording and a screenshot with QR codes and personal details hidden. A phone showing signal bars does not prove the data session is working, and a successful Wi-Fi test does not prove the eSIM is connected.

Avoid repeatedly deleting and reinstalling. Some travel profiles cannot be downloaded again. The no-service and no-data checklist gives a safer sequence and the information support needs.

FAQs

Can I keep my home SIM on a Pixel with a travel eSIM?

Often, if the exact phone and carrier combination supports both active lines. Choose the travel line for data and check the home carrier's call and SMS roaming terms separately.

Does an unlocked Pixel guarantee 5G on every travel plan?

No. Unlocking permits another provider's service; the phone model, supported bands, plan, network and local conditions still determine connectivity. Compare the selected plan's compatibility requirements.

Should I erase the eSIM if the Pixel has no internet?

No. First check the selected data line, coverage, validity and supplied network settings. Contact support before deleting because the installation code may not be reusable.
