Use travel data while keeping access to SMS sent to your home number. Check dual-SIM settings, roaming charges and verification before leaving Australia.

A data-only travel eSIM cannot receive ordinary SMS sent to your Australian mobile number. Those messages still belong to the home service. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you may be able to keep that service available for SMS while the travel eSIM supplies internet, provided the home carrier supports roaming in the destination.
The two checks are separate: can the home number receive the message, and what activity can create a charge? Turning off data roaming on the home line does not disable every paid calling or messaging feature.
It is easy to treat every notification as “a text”. Before travelling, identify how important services actually contact you.
| Message type | What delivers it | What a data-only travel eSIM contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary SMS to your home number | Your home mobile service and supported network access | No replacement for the addressed number |
| WhatsApp conversation | Internet and the registered app account | Internet access where the app works |
| Bank app approval notification | The bank's app and its supported verification method | Internet access, subject to the bank's requirements |
An app notification and an SMS code can appear on the same lock screen but have different failure causes. If your bank offers another verification method, set it up through the bank's official app or instructions before leaving. Do not assume every bank supports the same alternatives.
Find the exact name of your current plan, not only the network brand. Prepaid, postpaid, older plans and reseller services can have different international arrangements.
Ask four specific questions: does the plan support receiving SMS in each destination; must international roaming be enabled on the account; does receiving an SMS cost anything or activate a daily pack; and what happens if you answer a call, send a message or use voicemail? Save the answers with your travel notes.
As one current example, Telstra's international roaming page separates incoming SMS from Day Pass triggers such as voice calls, outgoing SMS and data. This is not a promise about every Australian carrier or every Telstra plan. Verify your own service's terms and destination eligibility.
Also check whether your number will remain active throughout the trip. A travel eSIM does not keep an expiring prepaid home service alive. Avoid cancelling or porting the home number casually when existing accounts still depend on it.
Give the services clear labels such as “Home SMS” and “Trip data”. On a supported phone, keep the home line available if you need SMS, select the travel line for mobile data, disable home-line data roaming, and review automatic data switching. Enable roaming on the travel line only as its provider instructs.
Apple documents separate voice and data choices in its Dual SIM guide. It also notes that switching settings can affect data during a voice call. Do not change them simply to improve a call without considering which line would supply the data and its charges.
For supported Pixel devices, Google's dual-SIM instructions cover per-SIM preferences. Availability depends on the model and carrier; storing several profiles does not mean every phone can keep all of them active together. The iPhone setup guide and Samsung/Android setup guide provide broader installation help.
Before the flight, sign into essential accounts and confirm that the recorded phone number is correct. Complete any supported recovery setup while you still have reliable access. Save the carrier's support route and your bank's official contact details somewhere you can reach without searching through email.
After arrival, confirm that both intended lines are enabled and see which one supplies mobile data. Test ordinary internet first. Then, if needed, request a single verification message through the legitimate service you are using. Allow for its delivery timer rather than requesting many codes in quick succession.
Treat a successful test as evidence for that service at that time, not a guarantee for every sender. Short-code delivery, anti-fraud checks, network registration and sender restrictions can differ. Keep a supported backup authentication method where your bank or account provider offers one.
A working travel connection narrows the problem. Check whether the home line has service, whether account-level roaming is permitted, and whether the sender has the right number including its country code. Check any message filtering without sharing the verification code with anyone.
If the home line shows no service, contact the home carrier through a working internet connection. If ordinary SMS works but one account's codes do not, follow that account provider's official recovery process. BambooSIM cannot reroute an Australian carrier's SMS through a data-only destination plan.
Do not rely on Wi-Fi Calling as a universal workaround. International support, SMS over Wi-Fi and billing depend on the home carrier, device and plan. Confirm those terms before treating it as your backup.
Some travellers need their home number daily. Others can use approved app-based authentication and prefer to turn the home line off while abroad. The useful choice depends on your accounts and carrier terms, not on a single setting recommended to everyone.
If you retain the line, avoid answering or placing ordinary calls until you understand their charges. If you disable it, expect ordinary SMS to that line to be unavailable while it is off. You can still use an existing messaging app over travel data; see WhatsApp with a travel eSIM.
Compare travel eSIM plans for the internet part of this arrangement. For a Japan trip, a Japan data plan can supply maps and apps without pretending to replace your Australian number.
Not when the code is addressed to your home number. You need access to that number's service or another verification method the bank supports.
No universal rule covers every carrier and plan. Check receiving charges, roaming eligibility and any daily-pack triggers for your exact service.
No. Calls, sent messages, voicemail and other services have their own billing rules. Switching off the entire home line also removes ordinary SMS access while it remains off.
