SKT eSIM Korea Setup: Passport Check, Calls and SMS

Install the SKT tourist eSIM from its QR voucher, connect to the SKT network after arriving in Korea, then complete passport verification if you need carrier calls or SMS. SK Telecom says mobile data works before passport verification; voice and text do not.

SKT’s official visitor eSIM page describes unlimited LTE data with a stated maximum service speed. BambooSIM’s current SKT Unlimited terms do not add a usage-triggered daily slowdown, but real speed still varies by coverage, congestion and device support (official SKT product details).

SKT eSIM setup step by step

1. On stable Wi-Fi, scan the QR code from the voucher and add the eSIM.
2. Label the line SKT Korea and leave it off for mobile data until the provider’s activation instructions say to connect.
3. After landing, enable the line and select it for mobile data.
4. Confirm the phone registers on SKT and that a webpage loads.
5. Open the official SKT passport-verification page.
6. Enter the mobile number and rental/contract number shown on the voucher.
7. Enter the passport details exactly as printed.
8. After verification, test an incoming call or text. Recharge before making outgoing calls or sending outgoing SMS.

SKT’s own verification guide lists last name, first name, passport number, date of birth and nationality. It does not instruct travellers to upload a passport photo in the online flow (official SKT verification steps).

When the phone number appears

For SKT eSIM, the assigned phone number is visible when the QR code details arrive by email. You can keep that number for hotel forms, local bookings, or contacts that ask for a Korean mobile number.

For SKT pickup SIM, the number is confirmed after the physical SIM is collected. That is normal because the product is handed over at the airport desk.

In both cases, seeing the phone number does not mean calls and SMS are already live. Passport authentication has to be completed first.

Passport authentication

The tourist product is for foreign nationals and is not available to Republic of Korea passport holders. Enter the passport details manually on the activation portal exactly as shown on the document.

SKT permits passport verification for one product per passport. This is an SKT product rule, not a universal “one line per Korean carrier” law. If a couple needs two verified SKT lines, each eligible traveller should use their own passport.

If online authentication cannot be completed, contact SKT or follow the voucher’s desk-support instructions. Carry the physical passport rather than relying on a scan.

Calls, texts, and recharge

SKT states that incoming domestic voice calls and texts are free on the phone-enabled tourist eSIM after passport verification. Outgoing voice and SMS require recharge. Recharge is available through SKRoaming and at SK Telecom Roaming Desks; it is not handled through a BambooSIM voice-credit API.

The tourist number cannot be used for every Korean identity flow. SKT explicitly says personal-authentication services and payment-verification SMS receipt are unavailable. Buy it for ordinary calls, texts and forms—not as a substitute for a resident identity-verified account.
