South Korea eSIM with Phone Number: Calls and SMS

A South Korea tourist eSIM can include a Korean mobile number, but not every travel eSIM does. Important limitation: a tourist number is not the same as a resident identity-verified line. SKT says its tourist eSIM cannot be used for personal-authentication services or payment-verification SMS. Buy it for normal calls, texts, callbacks and forms—not banking or resident account verification.

Decide by the service you need

If a hotel only needs a callback number, an eligible tourist line may be useful. If a Korean app asks for resident identity verification, stop and check that requirement before buying: owning a Korean number does not make the tourist line eligible. Existing WhatsApp or other messaging accounts use mobile data and do not require changing your registered number.

Before checkout, confirm that the selected option includes a number, that the traveller is eligible for passport verification, and that the duration covers the whole stay. Why a Korean number helps

Many travellers can manage a Korea trip using data apps only. A Korean number becomes useful when you want ordinary local callbacks, need to contact an accommodation or complete a form that accepts a tourist number.

A useful check before relying on the number

Save your number in both the displayed domestic format and the international format supplied with the order. After the required verification, test an ordinary incoming call or SMS separately from mobile data. Working internet does not prove that voice service or outgoing credit is ready.

If a hotel cannot reach you, first check whether verification is complete and whether it dialled the number correctly. If only outgoing calls fail, check the included benefit and separate SKRoaming balance. Do not change a working data profile merely to troubleshoot call credit.

For a booking form, ask the business whether an overseas or tourist number is accepted before making the number your only contact method. Keep an existing email or app contact as a backup. A tourist line should not become the sole recovery number for a long-term account.

Number timing

For eSIM buyers, the number is visible early because it is included with the QR code details sent by email. That lets you record the number before you arrive.

For pickup SIM buyers, the number is tied to the physical handover process and can be confirmed after collection at the airport desk.

Neither path means calls and SMS are live before authentication. The line must pass passport authentication before voice and text can be used.

Passport authentication

The SKT tourist product is for foreign nationals and is not sold to Republic of Korea passport holders. Enter passport details manually when prompted; the official online flow asks for identity details rather than a passport photo upload.

SKT allows passport verification for one product per passport. If two eligible travellers both need verified SKT numbers, each should use their own passport.

Some cases may require in-person verification at an SK Telecom Roaming Desk. Carry the physical passport, especially if you plan to rely on calls or SMS soon after landing.

Calls, SMS, and balance

The current BambooSIM SKT offer includes one outbound call of up to five minutes, once, after authentication. Additional outbound calls and outgoing SMS need separate SKRoaming credit. This benefit is not five free minutes on every call.

Incoming domestic calls and texts are free after verification under SKT’s official tourist eSIM terms. Beyond the one-time free call, outgoing calls and texts use separate prepaid credit, available through SKRoaming online or at SK Telecom Roaming Desks. BambooSIM does not sell or add SKT voice/SMS credit.
