Calls and SMS depend on the selected plan, not just the destination. A data-only eSIM provides internet for apps such as WhatsApp, LINE and FaceTime, but does not include a carrier phone number or ordinary calls and SMS.
Which plans include a phone number?
- South Korea SKT Unlimited: the eSIM number arrives with the QR details; pickup SIM numbers are confirmed after collection. Passport authentication enables incoming domestic calls and SMS. One outbound call of up to five minutes is included once; further outbound use needs separate SKRoaming credit. The tourist number does not provide Korean resident identity verification.
- Vietnam MobiFone: every MobiFone bundle includes a Vietnam number. Call and SMS allowances vary by bundle. Viettel data-only options do not include these services.
- Orange Europe: includes a number, calls and SMS. Check the selected bundle for the covered countries and the separate European and international allowances.
- Thailand TRUE tourist bundles: incoming calls and SMS require identity verification at a TRUE/dtac store. Outbound use and top-up eligibility depend on the bundle. Data-only options are different products.
- Australia Vodafone bundles: include local calls, with international minutes on selected bundles. Check the bundle for SMS inclusions. Australia's data-only options do not include carrier calls or SMS.
An included number is not a guarantee that a bank, booking app or identity-verification service will accept it. Confirm the service's requirements before buying a plan for that purpose.
Keeping your usual number
If you are using a standard data-only eSIM, keep your primary SIM active for calls or SMS if you need bank codes, airline messages, or Wi-Fi calling. Remember to turn off mobile data roaming on your primary SIM/eSIM to avoid unintended charges.
Turning off data roaming does not prevent your home carrier from charging for calls, outgoing SMS or other roaming services. Check its overseas rates and select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Wi-Fi calling depends on your home carrier and device; it does not add a phone number to a data-only travel plan.
