If your eSIM has signal but mobile data is not working, work through these checks in order.
1. Confirm the eSIM is installed
Open your phone's SIM or Mobile/Cellular settings and look through the installed eSIM list. The eSIM name is not always BambooSIM. A Japan eSIM may appear as KDDI or au.
If a QR code now says it cannot be used, or you previously saw an Unable to Activate eSIM or Failed to Activate eSIM message, the installation may already have completed. Check the full eSIM list before scanning again. The most recently installed eSIM is usually near the bottom.
Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting. Most eSIMs can only be installed once.
2. Select the correct line for mobile data
- Turn the BambooSIM eSIM on.
- Select it as the device's Mobile Data or Cellular Data line.
- Temporarily turn off other SIMs/eSIMs so you can confirm data is using the correct line.
- Leave network selection on Automatic.
3. Check the product-specific settings
Check the exact product name in your confirmation email or the BambooSIM portal, then use the APN settings guide and Data Roaming guide.
Only legacy eSIMs whose installation instructions explicitly specify APN globaldata should use it. Other products should keep the APN on Automatic.
4. Refresh the connection
- Turn Aeroplane Mode on for around 10 seconds, then turn it off.
- Allow up to a minute for the eSIM to reconnect.
- Restart the device if it still does not connect.
5. Check the plan and location
- Confirm you are in a destination included in the plan.
- Check that the plan is active and still has data or validity remaining.
- Move outside or to another location if the signal is weak.
This plan does not yet support top-ups—but it’s something we’re working on behind the scenes. If the plan has run out of data or validity, purchase a new plan for the destination.
For Japan KDDI products, manual APN details should only be tried as the final step after all checks above.
If the issue continues, please submit a ticket with the product name, device model, current country, and screenshots of your SIM and Mobile Data settings.
